Are there deer in north texas. Types of Texas Deer

A White-tailed Deer buck is considered mature at 4. So these data represent mature bucks. Age is the largest component of getting deer with large antlers on your property. The older the deer, the larger the antlers. At least to a point. Right behind the Blackland Prairies again! Some areas do better than others in letting deer get mature prior to shooting them. The Edwards plateau and South Texas have the highest percentage of mature bucks getting harvested.

The Piney woods and Post Oak Savannah eco-regions have the lowest percentage of their harvest being mature bucks. The area that grows the largest mature bucks in Texas is the South Texas Plains. Due to habitat degradation, Sika deer have quickly vanished from most of their natural range.

Sika deer were introduced to the country for the first time in Over 5, of them were thought to be living in the state in , with nearly half free-ranging. The Barasingha deer has a dark dorsal line and a golden brown summer coat. The males develop a noticeable neck ruff throughout the winter, and their coarser dull grayish-brown coat has lighter underparts.

They weigh to pounds and reach 44 to 46 inches tall at the shoulder, with females significantly smaller. This swamp deer adores the water. However, mangroves and dry deciduous woods are among the forested areas where barasinghas are frequently spotted.

Deer in Texas Deer hunting is a popular winter and fall activity for many people, and Texas is home to millions of deer of various species.

White-tailed Deer Around 5. Habitat The majority of the middle and western regions of the state are where the Texas white-tail may be frequently found. Population In Texas, of the counties are home to an estimated 5. Mule Deer Texas has no migratory mule deer; these species are endemic to the state. The pre-dawn chill hovered in the upper 30s, something I expected a few weeks earlier in northern Illinois, but not here, in North Texas.

It was the Saturday after Thanksgiving and the bucks were just starting to chase the does around. Sadly, I only had a couple of days to hunt, but rekindling my friendship with Steve and Angela Rortvedt had made the long drive from my southern Arizona home worth it even if the deer did not cooperate. I had bowhunted with the Rortvedts twice before, in and , killing dandy bucks both times.

Plus, Steve is an old Army combat medic who did time during the Vietnam War, giving him a special place in my heart. The land was always hunted hard and things were never just right. I realized there was a need to provide the working man with a Texas experience that included a chance to hunt free-ranging trophy-class deer that were not pressured to death, as well as give them a nice place to stay, feed them well, and make sure all the equipment was shipshape.

We also work very closely with Texas Parks and Wildlife to maintain the proper deer ratio on the land we hunt. Here, unlike in South Texas, the bucks have large bodies, with many bucks pushing pounds on the hoof. Mature bucks sport wide, heavy racks, with bucks scoring in the to Boone and Crockett range not at all uncommon. And so, as I settled in for my third day a full hour before I could see, I was excited.

A bowhunter by nature, I enjoy the chance to break out a rifle now and then. I was overlooking a large expanse of sagebrush country, with a corn feeder set yards below me. By , there were estimated to be around 4 Million White-tailed deer in Texas and by they had an estimated population of 4. This region is almost 3 times as densely populated as any other region of the state. The least densely populated area is Trans-Pecos where there are areas with no White-tailed deer at all.

Blackland prairie regions of the state also exhibited lower average populations which hovered around 9 deer per 1, acres. In the estimate above, I combined population estimates from the half of the state surveyed in and the other half of the state surveyed in Six of the 41 areas did not have population data associated with them, so there are likely more than 5.

However, 4 of those regions represented sparsely populated areas such as the western portions of the panhandle and much of the Trans-Pecos region of the state. In most cases the limiting factor for White-tailed deer populations is food availability. Rarely are water or cover limiting factors until you get to the Trans-Pecos region of Texas.
